“Champions of Industry” set to produce new content on safe weightlifting, with host Jimmy Johnson

The benefits of weightlifting for sport are well known. The regimen builds incredible muscles for bodybuilders and helps college baseball players hit harder. It also improves everyday activities for non-athletes: parents develop the endurance to run around with rambunctious kids, shoppers are more able to lift heavy bags from grocery carts into the trunks of cars, and seniors maintain the core strength for ballroom dancing.

Because heavy weights are involved, safe lifting requires care to prevent injury. Former football player and coach Jimmy Johnson would know. He hosts the award-winning “Champions of Industry,” an independently-produced series that is showing on many Public Television stations. From 2003 to 2013, the series received 85 Telly awards.

The upcoming weightlifting segment explains that good technique is the key to maximum effectiveness. Increasing the pounds just for bragging rights is not the ultimate goal. Proper form for the necessary number of repetitions is more important. The weight must move in a controlled way through the full range of motion rather than as quickly as possible. Only then can the correct muscles can engage and grow without over-stressing the rest of the body.

Exercisers also need to breathe consistently, instead of holding in the air. Otherwise, blood pressure may increase abnormally. To prevent imbalance, all parts of the body need to be worked equally, especially the core back and ab muscles. Muscles must then rest so they have time to recover and grow. Working the same body parts two days in a row is not recommended.
